Myth
Recovery after a hip replacement is very long.
At the Hanche Genou Clinic, thanks to our accelerated recovery protocol, our patients begin walking just three hours after their surgery with the help of a walker and sometimes a cane. After only 2 to 3 weeks, most of our patients no longer need the cane. A return to an active life is possible very quickly!
Myth
At the age of 50, you’re too young to have a knee or hip replacement!
ou
Knee and hip replacements are reserved for people over the age of 65.
There is no age limit for benefiting from a knee replacement! With the durability of modern prostheses that we use at the Hanche Genou Clinic, we can now offer a solution to younger individuals suffering from debilitating knee and hip osteoarthritis.
Myth
Hip replacement is a painful surgery that requires hospitalization.
Same-day surgery, known as outpatient surgery, is possible and even preferable thanks to the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols we follow. A large proportion of patients at the Hanche Genou Clinic can return home the same evening and sleep in their own bed.
Myth
With a knee prosthesis, you have to avoid sports and intense activities!
On the contrary, recent studies clearly show that sports are beneficial for the patient and do not lead to early wear. At the Hanche Genou Clinic we encourage our patients to return to their sports and passions!
Myth
The lifespan of a knee prosthesis is around 15 years. After that, it needs to be replaced with a revision surgery.
The majority of our patients will never need a new prosthesis! According to the most recent studies on the survival of modern prostheses, after more than 20 years of follow-up, only 10% of patients will require re-operation.
Myth
The hip prosthesis, made of titanium and ceramic, weighs more than 2.5 kg.
Muscle strengthening is essential to learn how to walk with this added weight.
A hip prosthesis weighs approximately 500 grams, or just over a pound! However, reconditioning the muscles weakened by arthritis is essential for rehabilitation to optimize your mobility and prevent injuries as you return to an active lifestyle. We work closely with physiotherapists to support you through this stage of recovery.
Myth
After a hip replacement, you must follow countless restrictions and avoid all sorts of movements such as bending over, crossing your legs, sleeping on your side, etc.
At the Hanche Genou Clinic, we use modern techniques and technologies to provide you with a stable prosthesis that imposes no limitations on movement or activity. The goal is for you to forget that your hip was ever replaced!
