Hip osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of the bones in the hip joint wears down over time. This leads to pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the joint, eventually affecting the individual’s ability to carry out daily activities. As the condition progresses, the bones may begin to rub directly against each other, worsening pain and joint damage.

Causes of hip osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis develops due to a complex interplay of factors, with aging being one of the main causes of the gradual wear and tear of joint cartilage. Excess weight places additional stress on the hip joint, accelerating cartilage deterioration and worsening joint pain. Repetitive activities or jobs that put constant pressure on the hip joints can hasten the onset of osteoarthritis, making certain individuals more vulnerable. Genetic predisposition also plays a role, with those who have a family history of osteoarthritis being at higher risk of developing the condition. Previous hip injuries, such as fractures or dislocations, can compromise the joint’s integrity and lead to early-onset osteoarthritis, highlighting the significant impact of past injuries and lifestyle choices on hip joint health.

Potential treatment

When lifestyle changes, physiotherapy, and other non-invasive treatments fail to relieve the symptoms of hip osteoarthritis, hip replacement surgery may be considered to restore joint function and alleviate pain.

Total hip replacement

At the Hanche Genou Clinic, our expert surgeons, Dr. Yves Laflamme and Dr. Hai Nguyen, offer hip replacement surgery to help patients regain their mobility and quality of life. During this procedure, the damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. The surgery creates a new, properly functioning joint and prevents the bones from rubbing against each other — the main cause of the pain and stiffness associated with hip osteoarthritis.
