Knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of the bones in the knee joint wears down over time. This leads to pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the joint, eventually affecting an individual’s ability to carry out daily activities. As the condition progresses, the bones may begin to rub directly against each other, worsening pain and joint damage.

Causes of knee osteoarthritis

A combination of medical and lifestyle factors influences the development of knee osteoarthritis. Aging plays a significant role, as the risk of developing the condition increases with age due to the natural wear and tear of cartilage. Additionally, carrying excess weight can put extra strain on the knee joints, accelerating cartilage breakdown. Individuals engaged in occupations or activities that place repetitive stress on the knees are also at higher risk of faster cartilage wear. Genetics may contribute to susceptibility, with a family history of osteoarthritis increasing the likelihood of developing the condition. People with a history of knee injuries, such as ligament damage or cartilage tears, are more likely to develop osteoarthritis, highlighting the impact of past physical trauma and lifestyle factors on knee health.

Potential treatment

When lifestyle changes, physiotherapy, and other non-invasive treatments fail to relieve the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis, knee replacement surgery may be considered to restore joint function and alleviate pain.

Total or partial knee replacement

At the Hanche Genou Clinic, our expert surgeons, Dr. Yves Laflamme and Dr. Hai Nguyen, offer knee replacement surgery to help patients regain their mobility and quality of life. During this procedure, the damaged bone and cartilage on the surface of the knee joint are removed and replaced with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic components. The artificial joint is designed to replicate the movement and function of a healthy, natural knee. This prevents the bones from rubbing against each other — the main cause of pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.
