The hip joint functions like a ball-and-socket joint, where the rounded head of the thigh bone (femur) fits into a cup-shaped space in the pelvis called the socket (acetabulum). This joint allows your leg to move forward, backward, and side to side in a smooth motion. It is surrounded by muscles, ligaments, and tendons that provide support and enable movement. A special lining called cartilage prevents the bones from rubbing against each other, allowing the joint to move smoothly and without pain.
Hip replacement, or hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. This procedure is designed to relieve pain and improve mobility in individuals who have not found relief through other treatments or interventions. The goal is to create a properly functioning new joint that prevents the bones from rubbing against each other, which is the main cause of pain and stiffness associated with degenerative hip conditions.

People who can benefit from hip replacement are generally those experiencing chronic hip pain, inflammation, and mobility issues that significantly impact their quality of life.
This is a wear-and-tear form of arthritis that commonly affects older adults, leading to the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone in the hips.
This autoimmune form of arthritis causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and can damage the cartilage and bone of the joint.
Also known as avascular necrosis, this condition occurs when blood flow to the hip bone is disrupted, leading to the death of bone tissue and eventual collapse of the joint.
At the Hanche Genou Clinic, we use a cutting-edge, high-performance femoral ceramic head that offers excellent biocompatibility, low wear, outstanding chemical and hydrothermal stability, and superior strength. Thanks to their larger diameter, these prosthetic heads provide optimal stability and significantly improve the range of motion for patients undergoing hip replacement surgery. While the femoral stems are consistently made of titanium, we select from a variety of models to precisely match each patient’s unique anatomy. This personalized approach ensures a tailored fit and promotes superior outcomes in hip replacement procedures.
Dr. Laflamme and Dr. Nguyen’s commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements ensures that you receive the most advanced techniques and technologies available in the field. Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) allows our surgeons to personalize each joint replacement procedure with millimetric precision. This technology can improve limb alignment and the positioning of the implant.

Hip replacement begins with an incision above the hip to expose the joint. The surgeon then removes the head of the femur (thigh bone) and cleans the acetabulum (hip socket). An artificial socket is implanted into the pelvis, and a metal or ceramic ball is inserted into the hollow center of the femur. The new ball is placed into the new socket to form the joint, replicating the natural structure of the hip. The incision is then closed, and the patient begins the recovery process. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about an hour.

What sets us apart is our comprehensive approach to patient care. It combines an enhanced recovery protocol with a minimally invasive surgical technique, allowing for faster recovery and the ability to walk as early as the day after surgery.
By standardizing care before, during, and after the operation—with a focus on nutrition, pain management, hydration, and early mobilization—this approach reduces hospital stays and complications while actively involving patients in their recovery. Our commitment to ERAS reflects our dedication to improving outcomes and the patient experience at the Hanche Genou Clinic.
Hip replacement often leads to a dramatic improvement in mobility and quality of life. Replacing the damaged hip joint with a prosthesis relieves pain and improves movement, allowing patients to easily resume daily activities such as walking and climbing stairs. This renewed mobility supports a more active lifestyle, encouraging participation in low-impact exercises such as swimming and cycling, which contribute to overall physical and mental well-being. While high-impact activities should be moderated to ensure the longevity of the prosthetic joint, the significant reduction in discomfort and increased range of motion after surgery allow patients to lead a more active and fulfilling life.
There is no age limit for hip replacement! Thanks to the durability of the modern implants we use at the Hanche Genou Clinic, we are now able to offer a solution to younger individuals suffering from debilitating hip osteoarthritis.
Hip replacement at the Hanche Genou Clinic is a same-day, outpatient procedure thanks to the optimized recovery protocols (ERAS) we follow. Many patients are able to return home the same evening and sleep in their own bed.
A hip prosthesis weighs about 500 grams—just over one pound! Reconditioning muscles weakened by osteoarthritis is essential during rehabilitation to optimize mobility and prevent injury when returning to an active lifestyle. We work closely with physiotherapists to support you throughout this recovery phase.
At the Hanche Genou Clinic, we use modern techniques and technologies to provide a stable prosthesis that won’t limit your movements or activities. The goal is for you to forget that your hip was ever replaced! You’ll be able to do all kinds of everyday movements, such as bending over, crossing your legs, sleeping on your side, and more.
The majority of our patients will never need to change their prosthesis! According to the most recent studies on the survival of modern prostheses, over 90% of patients can still expect to have their prosthesis after more than 20 years.
Yes, recent studies clearly show that sport is beneficial for the patient and without the risk of premature wear and tear. At the Hanche Genou Clinic, we encourage our patients to return to their sports and passions!
